Japanese: ~ていく & ~てくる

In English, we often say things like “I’m going to buy a new outfit” or “I’m going to bring a game to play.”

 

In Japanese, we would use ~ていく and ~てくる for these patterns.

 

~ていく means “to go to do something”, something is “going away” from you, or to express something that you think will happen in the future.

雨が降っていく。It's going to rain.

運転していった。They drove away. (うん・てん)
猫が走っていった。The cat went running away (from me).

 

As for ~てくる, it means “to do something and come back”, something is “coming toward” you, or to express something will happen starting now (especially something that started suddenly).
 

雨が降ってくる。It's suddenly raining.

猫が走ってきた。The cat came running towards me.

パーチ―に🍣をもってくる。I'll bring sushi to the party.

 

本をもってくる。I'll bring the book.

本をもっていく。I'll take the book.

Japanese: Expressing desire in the third person.

Use ほしがっている to express "to want" in the third person.

お姉さんは車をほしがっています。Her sister wants a car.
インコはバナナをほしがっている。The parrot wants a banana.

To express things other people want to do, conjugate verbs to the plain past form and tack ～がっている.

いつも韓国ドラマを見たがっている。She always wants to watch Kdramas.
彼は彼女に車を買ったがっています。He wants to buy his girlfriend a car.
